Part 10
The Blue Zones Formula

Picture a hillside village in Sardinia. A shepherd of 96 walks five miles of steep ground behind his animals, eats beans and bread and a little cheese, drinks a small glass of red wine with friends at dusk, and has never heard the word “longevity.” He does not track anything. Nobody around him does. Whatever he is doing, he is not doing it on purpose. That is the most interesting thing about him.
Clinical scenes in this edition are explicitly labeled illustrations. They describe imagined situations used to explain medical decisions, not documented patients, diagnoses, conversations, or treatment outcomes. They should not be read as evidence that a particular intervention works. Personal recollections are recollections, not medical records.
Evidence grade (draft mapping). 7 questions; a question with mixed evidence counts under each grade.
- 130. What are the Blue Zones?Five regions identified by the writer Dan Buettner and his research colleagues as having unusually many people who live past 90 and 100: Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Ikaria in Greece, and the Seventh-day Adventist community of Loma Linda, California.CObservational
- 131. What is the Blue Zones formula?Nine shared habits, which Buettner calls the Power 9.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 132. Is the Blue Zones research reliable? The lifestyle lessons are well supported by other research. The claim that these exact places have record numbers of centenarians has been challenged.CObservational
- 133. You say alcohol is not healthy. Why do Blue Zones drink wine? The wine is probably not the active ingredient. The table is.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 134. What happened to Okinawa? It lost much of its advantage within two generations, as fast food and cars arrived.CObservational
- 135. How do I build a Blue Zone at home?Change your surroundings so that the healthy choice is the easy one. People in the Blue Zones do not have more willpower. They have fewer temptations and more reasons to move.GGuideline-based / consensus
- 136. How does the Blue Zones approach fit with high-tech longevity? They can complement each other. Studies of long-lived communities suggest useful habits, while independent trials support several preventive treatments. Modern medicine adds what a shepherd never had: early detection and treatment.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
