Question 75 of 433
“Leaky gut,” SIBO breath tests, and organic acid tests?

The short answer
SKIP the first and third. The second has a limited role in people with symptoms.
Leaky gut tests: the gut lining’s permeability is real biology, but studies have shown that the commercial tests sold to measure it do not measure what they claim.
SIBO breath tests: gastroenterologists use them, cautiously, in people with bloating and diarrhea, especially after abdominal surgery. Accuracy is modest. They have no role in people without symptoms.
Organic acid tests: validated for rare inherited diseases in children. Their use to diagnose “yeast overgrowth” or “mitochondrial dysfunction” in adults is not.
