Question 327 of 433
What is TMS, and should healthy people have it for “mental wellness”?

The short answer
Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a proven treatment for depression that has not responded to medication. It is not proven for general wellness.
A magnetic coil held against the scalp stimulates a mood-related part of the brain. In people with stubborn depression, more than half improve and about a third recover fully. It is also cleared for obsessive-compulsive disorder and migraine. Lately, versions have been marketed in med spas for stress and focus. Those claims are not supported by sham-controlled trials.
