Question 290 of 433
What is intermittent hypoxia training?

The short answer
Breathing air with alternately low and high oxygen through a mask while resting, meant to imitate altitude training. It is experimental.
A few small studies in older and cardiac patients show modest gains in exercise tolerance. There are no long-term results. Walking uphill increases exercise demand. It is not physiologically equivalent to breathing a controlled low-oxygen mixture.
