Question 144 of 433
Can type 2 diabetes itself be reversed?

The short answer
Often, yes, especially in the first several years. The key is substantial weight loss.
In a British trial called DiRECT, nearly half of people with type 2 diabetes who followed an intensive weight-loss program were off all diabetes medication, with blood sugar below the diabetes range, after one year. Among those who lost 33 pounds or more, the figure was 86 percent. Doctors use the word remission, because it can return if the weight does. The GLP-1 medicines and weight-loss surgery achieve similar results by the same route.
