Question 414 of 433
What is coming for Alzheimer’s disease?

The short answer
Earlier detection by blood test, treatment at home, and, most important, trials testing whether treating people before symptoms can prevent the disease.
The blood tests and the home-injected antibody were described in Part 12. The pivotal studies are two large trials giving anti-amyloid drugs to people who have amyloid in the brain and no symptoms yet. Results are expected in 2027 and 2028. If they succeed, Alzheimer’s care would begin to resemble heart care: find the risk early and treat it before damage is done. If they fail, the field will have to look beyond amyloid.
Also in early development is a protein called klotho, which improved memory in aged monkeys. The first human study is planned for 2027.
