Question 196 of 433
How long can I stay on hormone therapy? What if I am starting late?

The short answer
There is no fixed time limit. The decision should be reviewed every year. Starting after 60 or more than ten years past menopause needs more caution.
Women who feel well on hormone therapy and have no new risk factors can continue, with an annual conversation about benefits and risks. For women who are starting late, the concern is that estrogen may unsettle plaque already present in the arteries. That does not make it forbidden. It means a careful assessment first, preferably a low dose through the skin, and a look at your heart risk.
