Question 190 of 433
What causes a hot flash, and how long do they last?

The short answer
Falling estrogen disturbs the brain’s thermostat, so the body suddenly acts as if it were overheating. On average, hot flashes last about seven years, and for some women more than ten.
Scientists have identified the specific nerve cells in the hypothalamus that misfire. That discovery led directly to new non-hormonal medicines that calm them. About three out of four women have hot flashes, and for roughly one in four they are severe enough to disrupt work and sleep.
