Question 188 of 433
What exactly are perimenopause and menopause?

The short answer
Menopause is the point twelve months after a woman’s final period. The average age is 51. Perimenopause is the unpredictable stretch before it, which can last four to eight years.
During perimenopause, estrogen does not decline smoothly. It swings, sometimes higher than ever and then very low, which is why symptoms can be worst before periods actually stop. A woman may spend a third or more of her life after menopause. It is not an ending. It is a long second half that deserves a plan.
