The short answer

Low-dose vaginal estrogen is safe, effective, and underused. It stays local and can be used by almost all women, usually for life.

Unlike hot flashes, these symptoms do not fade with time. They worsen. Vaginal estrogen as a cream, tablet, or ring restores the tissue, relieves pain with sex, and cuts recurrent urinary infections by about half. Doctors’ groups support its use even for many women who have had breast cancer, in consultation with their oncologist.
