Question 184 of 433
Do weight-loss medicines harm bone?

The short answer
Rapid weight loss by any method takes some bone and muscle with it. Strength training and protein reduce the loss.
This matters most for people over 60 on GLP-1 medicines. A 2024 trial found that combining the medicine with an exercise program preserved bone density, while the medicine alone did not. If you are losing a great deal of weight, ask for a bone density scan.
