Question 159 of 433

What is fatty liver, and why should I care?

Healthy plate of greens and fish in a bright kitchen

The short answer

Fat stored in the liver is now the most common liver disease in the world, affecting roughly one in three adults. It is an early warning for diabetes and heart disease, and it is reversible.

Most people have no symptoms. It is often found by accident on a scan or through mildly raised liver enzymes. Left alone, it can progress to scarring and cirrhosis. Losing 7 to 10 percent of body weight can clear much of the fat and inflammation, and losing more than 10 percent can reverse early scarring. Cut sugary drinks first; fructose goes straight to the liver. Coffee helps. Alcohol makes it worse.
