Question 137 of 433
What is metabolic health, and how do I know if I have it?

The short answer
It means your body handles sugar and fat properly. Five simple measures tell you, and most American adults fail at least one.
Waist under 40 inches for men, 35 for women (lower for people of Asian descent).
Blood pressure under 130/85.
Fasting glucose under 100.
Triglycerides under 150.
HDL cholesterol above 40 for men, 50 for women.
Three or more out of range is called metabolic syndrome. It multiplies the risk of heart disease, stroke, fatty liver, kidney disease, several cancers, and dementia. It is the soil in which most chronic disease grows.
