Question 147 of 433
What are GLP-1 medicines, in plain language?

The short answer
They copy a natural gut hormone that tells the brain you are full, slows the stomach, and helps the pancreas control sugar.
Semaglutide (sold as Ozempic and Wegovy) copies one hormone. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) copies two. In trials, average weight loss was about 15 percent with semaglutide and about 20 percent with tirzepatide over a little more than a year. Before these drugs, only surgery produced numbers like that.
Many patients describe something else too: the constant mental chatter about food goes quiet. For people who have fought their appetite for decades, that silence can be life-changing.
