Part 25
Inside the Longevity Industry

ILLUSTRATION. A storefront offers blood panels, hormones, devices, drips, and a blood-filtering session under one longevity membership. The attractive room tells you almost nothing about the evidence. A business model is easier to understand when you separate the physician’s time, the testing, the treatment, and the sales incentives.
Clinical scenes in this edition are explicitly labeled illustrations. They describe imagined situations used to explain medical decisions, not documented patients, diagnoses, conversations, or treatment outcomes. They should not be read as evidence that a particular intervention works. Personal recollections are recollections, not medical records.
Evidence grade (draft mapping). 15 questions; a question with mixed evidence counts under each grade.
- 365. What is a “longevity clinic”?A cash-pay medical business that sells testing, treatments, and coaching aimed at extending healthy life. There is no official definition, no specialty board, and no required standard.CObservational
- 366. What kinds of longevity businesses are there?Seven. Knowing which one you are standing in tells you most of what you need to know.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 367. What does a retail wellness clinic actually sell, and for how much?A long menu. Below is a composite of the menus that several large retail chains published in 2026. Individual businesses differ; the ranges are typical of the category, not the prices of any one company.Grade pending
- 368. If I graded that menu line by line, what would it look like?A small part is real medicine at a markup, a larger part is pleasant and unproven, and a meaningful part I would not buy at any price.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 369. Are the blood-test subscriptions worth it?They are a cheap way to get many tests and an unreliable way to get healthier. The value depends entirely on what you do with the results, and on not being frightened by the noise.Grade pending
- 370. What about the body-scan companies? They sell whole-body MRI for $500 to $2,500, or other kinds of body scanning. The radiology profession does not recommend them for healthy people, and the reason is false alarms.CObservational
- 371. What do the high-end membership clinics offer?A day or more of intensive testing each year, a physician with time, and a team that follows you. Prices run from several thousand dollars to more than $100,000 a year.Grade pending
- 372. Are the hospital and university longevity programs better?Academic affiliation can provide access to expertise and referral networks. It does not by itself establish that a program improves outcomes or that every test is justified.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 373. What about recovery studios and social wellness clubs?Think of them as gyms for relaxing. Sauna, cold plunges, compression, and company. Harmless for most healthy people, and the social part may be the most valuable thing they sell.CObservational
- 374. Are the luxury longevity resorts worth it?As a vacation that resets your habits, perhaps. As medicine, no.FNot demonstrated / insufficient
- 375. What is being offered offshore, and why do people go?Stem cell infusions, experimental gene therapy, and other treatments not approved in the United States. People go because they are hopeful, wealthy, or desperate. The evidence is thin and the protection is thinner.BLimited or small human studies
- 376. What about the telehealth companies that mail hormones, peptides, and “longevity drugs”?Convenient, lightly supervised, and built to sell. Some are careful. Many are not.RRegulatory status
- 377. What would the same care cost through ordinary medicine? Many useful preventive services are available through ordinary care. Costs depend on your insurance, location, indications, and the time and follow-up you need.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 378. What do the best longevity clinics get right?Time, measurement, coaching, and follow-up. Ordinary medicine should learn from them.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
- 379. What would an honest longevity clinic look like?It would spend most of its effort on what is proven, label everything else clearly, and never let its revenue depend on your fear.JClinical judgment / author synthesis
