Question 304 of 433
What is blood flow restriction training?

The short answer
Lifting light weights with a cuff partly restricting blood flow to the limb. It builds strength with much less load, and it is supported by research.
A review of 19 studies found strength gains close to those of heavy lifting. It is valuable after surgery or for people whose joints cannot tolerate heavy weights. Learn it from a physical therapist with proper cuffs, and avoid it if you have had blood clots.
