Question 220 of 433
How much cancer is preventable?

The short answer
About 40 percent of cancers and nearly half of cancer deaths in the United States are tied to risk factors we can change.
That estimate comes from the American Cancer Society. The rest is a mix of inherited risk, aging, and plain bad luck in cell division. You cannot bring your risk to zero. You can lower it substantially, and you can catch much of what remains at a curable stage.
