Question 72 of 433
Are resting metabolic rate tests and body composition scales useful?

The short answer
SOMETIMES for motivation. Neither changes medical care.
A metabolic rate test tells you roughly how many calories you burn at rest; the standard equations come close. Bioimpedance scales such as InBody estimate fat and muscle from an electrical current and shift with hydration, meals, and exercise. They are fine for watching a trend if you measure under the same conditions each time. A DEXA scan is more precise.
