Question 70 of 433
IGF-1, uric acid, cystatin C, and GGT?

The short answer
One of the four is clearly useful.
Cystatin C: WORTH IT in the right person. It gives a truer reading of kidney function when the usual creatinine test is distorted, as it is in very muscular people, frail people, and anyone taking creatine.
Uric acid: useful for gout. Treating a high level without symptoms has not been shown to help.
IGF-1: used to diagnose growth hormone disorders. Both low and high levels are linked to higher mortality, so there is no “optimal” target.
GGT: a nonspecific liver and alcohol marker.
