Part 12

Protecting Your Brain

Illustration
Picture a retired teacher of 74 who has started repeating her stories. Her children assume it is Alzheimer’s and quietly begin to grieve. Her doctor finds a vitamin B12 level near the floor, a nightly sleeping pill, untreated hearing loss, and a thyroid that has slowed. Six months later she is herself again. Not every failing memory is dementia, and not every dementia is beyond influence. Of everything my patients fear, this is first. It deserves a clear head.

Clinical scenes in this edition are explicitly labeled illustrations. They describe imagined situations used to explain medical decisions, not documented patients, diagnoses, conversations, or treatment outcomes. They should not be read as evidence that a particular intervention works. Personal recollections are recollections, not medical records.
