Question 83 of 433
Brain MRI “volumetrics” and memory testing for healthy people?

The short answer
Routine brain volumetrics are not established screening for healthy people. Assess memory when symptoms, family concerns, or clinical observation suggest a problem.
Software can compare the size of your brain regions with averages for your age. In a person with no symptoms, a slightly small reading causes fear and has no treatment. Annual visits can include attention to cognition, especially when the person or family notices change. That is different from recommending the same formal screening test to every asymptomatic older adult.
