Question 28 of 433

What is ApoB, and why do longevity doctors talk about it so much?

Plain white round tablets in a small navy ceramic dish

The short answer

ApoB counts the number of harmful cholesterol particles in your blood. It is often a better predictor of risk than the standard LDL number.

Think of your bloodstream as a highway. LDL cholesterol measures the cargo. ApoB counts the trucks. It is the trucks that crash into the artery wall. Most of the time cargo and trucks rise together. But in people with diabetes, prediabetes, belly fat, or high triglycerides, there can be many small trucks carrying little cargo each. Their LDL looks fine and their ApoB is high.

The 2026 American cholesterol guideline recommends measuring ApoB in people like these, especially those with diabetes, high triglycerides, or metabolic syndrome. It is an inexpensive blood test. Ask for it.
